Tiki 38 an ideal family charter yacht in Thailand for up to 7 adults

For groups of up to 7 adults our Tiki 38 are the ideal yachts for a bareboat or skippered sailing holiday.

Our Tiki 38 cats are fast, fun to sail, spacious, comfortable, do of course not heel and thanks to their shallow draught open up large cruising area’s where a “normal” mono hull could not venture because she’d run aground.

Polynesian heritage in modern yacht charter

Our Tiki‘s are polynesian–type cats. The Wharram designed Tiki catamarans are directly descended from the ancient Polynesian travelling catamarans which were in use for thousands of years all over the tropical Pacific. The Polynesians were outstanding sailors and brilliant navigators. They criss-crossed the Pacific Ocean already at a time when in Europe nautical development was limited to floating down rivers on a log. James Wharram Designs in the UK has for many years produced modern interpretations of these Polynesian boats.

Tiki 38 fast, fun and comfortable sailing in the Andaman Sea

Our Wharram Tiki 38 catamarans are eminently suited for bareboat sailing charters in Thailand. Life in climates like Thailand’s is largely enjoyed outdoors so rather then trying to maximize the internal accommodation, as is done with most other catamarans, we went the opposite way and made instead the usable deck area as spacious as possible . The result is a living space of 66 sqm ( 700 sqft) which may well be large enough to land a helicopter on (we haven’t tried). Even with the maximum of 6-7 guests it does not get crowded.

Absolutely essential in warm climates however is proper protection from the sun, which we experience all year–round, and the odd tropical down pour which can be an issue in the months June-October.

Our Tiki 38’s have an open–back deck cabin with large opening front windows providing ample ventilation. The deck cabin has generous seating to port and to starboard. The port settee has a pull-out section which converts it in seconds in a spacious double bed.
The cockpit is shaded by a lightweight fixed bimini which provides more then sufficient protection from the sun. The bimini has roll-out extensions which instantly convert it into a full size awning .

In the large main cockpit you have standing headroom everywhere, a movable table and a comfortable position at the wheel for the helmsman which does not obstruct the movements of the others on board.

Ample accommodation

Accommodation in the hulls consists of two comfortable double cabins and two spacious private single cabins. Cabins are light and airy : two large opening hatches per cabin plus extra opening portholes in the doubles ensure a maximum flow of fresh air, in addition there are electric fans above each bed. Of course you can also sleep under the stars on deck or in the bow nets! There is one shower/toilet compartment plus a second shower on deck.

The galley has ample space for two cooks and is very well equipped (yes, there is a cork screw!). The stove has flame-failure cutouts .

Like all Wharrams, our Tiki 38 cats can safely be beached, given the appropriate location. We do allow our guests to beach the boats and the yachts are equipped with the right gear such as extra anchor and long ropes to facilitate doing so.

2x Tiki 38 catamaran: same same, but (slightly) different

There is a choice of two rigs for our Tiki 38’s.
One has a “modern catamaran sloop rig” with a fully battened roached mainsail. The boom has lazyjacks for easy sail handling and the fractional jib is roller reefed. For down wind work there is a gennaker with “snuffer“, which is part of the standard sail wardrobe .

The second Tiki 38 has a soft wingsail sloop rig. This rig was developed by James Wharram Designs, the architect of our yachts and combines ultimate simplicity with excellent performance (and splendid looks too). The boomless gaff sail is attached with a sleeve around the mast, much like a wind surf sail. No winches are needed to set the main and it can easily be reefed or dropped on any point of sail in all strengths of wind.
The jib is roller reefed and a gennaker with “snuffer” is also part of the standard sail ward robe.

Cruising speed of a Tiki 38 under sail depends of course on wind and load but 6-8kts, peaking 10-12 kts + is a realistic figure.

Tiki 38: the technical stuff of a charter catamaran

Mechanical propulsion is by a 26 hp Marine diesel engine driving twin propellers via a hydraulic system. Cruising speed under power is 6-6 1/2 kts, maneuverability is outstanding.

You’ll never need to worry about electric power consumption. Large capacity battery banks for domestic power and engine starting, seperately charged by a high output alternator and “smart” regulator, ensure the lights won’t go dim at the end of a long night partying and you’ll always have plenty of juice to start the engine the next morning .

Water capacity is 500 liters (131 gall.) in two tanks. Water system is of course pressurized. There are four outlets .
A secondary water system is dedicated for drinking water. The boat is supplied with 72 liters ( 19 gall.) of bottled mineral drinking water.
The tender is a 3.00m ( 11 ft) light weight RIB, custom built for us, with a Yamaha Malta outboard engine. She will carry up to 6-7 persons, yet is light enough to easily be taken on deck by one person. Underway the tender is carried on deck .

Dropping and hauling anchor is a breeze thanks to the powerful electric windlass. Our Tiki 38’s come with two anchors.

There are two boarding / swim ladders. One at the aft deck which you use when swimming, the second one at the front netting beam for easy dry access to the land when the boat is beached.

What is a sailing holiday without cool drinks? A 100 liter (27 gall) well insulated fridge box with a high–efficiency electric compressor ensures you are never without this “primary necessity”!

Between each charter we meticulously check all systems on board. As a result the reliability record of our boats is excellent. Should anything untoward happen however, we are on 24 hr stand-by to lend immediate assistance .
