Sailing Today Wharram in the Andaman by Andy Struthers We were looking for adventure afloat, but having checked the major charter company prices, decide that we had no wish to remortgage. I therefore opted for trawling the internet and after a while I found Makz ... Andy Struthers was looking for a sailing holiday with a difference. His last child had gone to university and he and his partner, and illustrator, Alison, wanted a break from the miserable time that is January in England; somewhere exotic that wouldn’t break the bank. download article |

Practical Boat Owner A taste of Thailand by Adrian Morgan Coral sand beaches, limestone caves, colourful reefs and mangrove swamps - Adrian Morgan discovers it all while exploring the islands and tropical rivers fringing the west coast of Thailand's Malay Peninsula. In the murky depths of my computer lurks a program that could précis the next 3,000 words to just five: 'Thailand', it would read '... excellent food ... great sailing." But what of the tropcial islands, the liana-clad limestone sea vaces, coral sand beaches and reefs, the mysterious rivers leading into the real jungly heart of Phuket's Andaman Sea Coast, our Wharram Tiki 30, or the people we met? download article |

Yachting Monthly Twin hulls in Thai waters by Tom Cunliffe Tom Cunliffe discovers that twin hulls can be heavenly during a Singha-soaked family cruise around north-east Thailand. ... All my life I've been fascinated by the Far East but I've no plans to take my own boat that way. The idea of chartering a standard production yacht in such waters holds little appeal, but I still dream. One day last autumn, however, an invitation from Max Jurgens materialised in my email inbox. Would I like a charter in Phuket? Max's outfilt, Siam Sailing, contrasts sharply with the 'corporate' image of the typical sailing holiday. Not only is he a thoroughly barefoot sort of character, he uses only James Wharram's 'back-to-nature' catamarans. download article |

Classic Boat Thai Take-away by Dan Houston Sailing a Wharram Tiki 30 catamaran in South Thaialnd is all about open-air living, fast passages and go anywhere ability. Oh, and hot food of course. Dan Houston took his camera. Riding to anchor in the dawn off a rocky island outcrop, or Ko, at Leam Taeng in Southern Thailand certainly banishes the cares of an English winter. And the hushed peace of this unspoilt cruising ground is only broken by the far-off diesel drone of a long-tail fishing boat as a fisherman and his wife get an early start to visit their bamboo fish traps just upstream. In fact we haven't seen a yacht for two days now, and we'll only see one or two, as we push into the river system of Krabi and Phang Nga provinces. download article |
